Winning the Epic Award, by Marilyn Baker

When we heard that the Braemar Creative Arts Festival had been short listed for the EPIC Award Scotland, that was encouragement enough, but the news that we had actually won left us speechless... but not for long! An all expenses paid trip to Glasgow for two members of the committee to collect the prize at the Voluntary Arts Organisation's Annual Conference (25th Feb), was a very welcome reward.

The awards ceremony was a grand affair, with Fiona Hyslop, MSP, the Cabinet Secretary for Culture presenting the prizes (pictured above far right). We received a unique trophy, a framed certificate, £200, plus free membership of Arts Development UK. But best of all were the words spoken by Fiona Hyslop when she said The Epic Award Winner for Scotland, Braemar Creative Arts Festival, represents everything that is positive about voluntary arts activity in Scotland - bringing people together, showcasing new and traditional crafts, and celebrating our rural communities. The Epic Awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of people who participate in cultural activities and help others to do so purely for the love of it.

I guess it is time to start work on Festival 2014, the dates for which are Wednesday 22nd - Sunday 26th October. Please email the Festival committee on braemarartsfestival@gmail.com with your comments, ideas or offers of help and involvement. Let us know what you would like to see in the programme and we'll try and make it happen.
